Things to Know Before Diving Bonaire

With so many things to consider before diving in Bonaire, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. We’ve broken down some of the most important information for you here:

  • If you’re new to diving, take a course! Beginners can sign up for a Discover Scuba Diving course that will teach them basic skills like how to use their equipment and how to breathe underwater. Even if your certification is from another country or under another name, this course will help prepare you for what it’s like diving in Bonaire.
  • Be aware of currents! As with any scuba destination, Bonaire has strong currents during certain times of year and sometimes even during certain times of day. This isn’t something that should scare off experienced divers; but if you’re just getting started or are not familiar with diving conditions around the world, it might be worth checking before heading out into open water on your own.

Know the difference between a reef and a wreck! Bonaire is known for its world-class diving—and it has some of the best reefs and wrecks in the world. The most famous of these is probably Hilma Hooker, an American cargo vessel that was deliberately sunk off the coast of Bonaire by her owners after it was discovered she’d been smuggling drugs. This is just one example of the many different dive sites you can visit while on your trip. If you’re interested
